The ALTA AGM & Airline Leaders Forum 2024, organized by the Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA), took place in Nassau, Bahamas. During the opening of this event, José Ricardo Botelho, CEO of ALTA, highlighted the importance of the region in the manufacturing of decarbonization products and the relevance of the Forum in the industry throughout its 20 years of history.

Botelho mentioned that one of the main challenges for the aviation industry in the region is the infrastructure deficit, noting that 54% of flights operate in airports with severe congestion. He also emphasized the high fuel costs, with this region being the most expensive in that aspect globally, and the lack of production of SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) in the region, which affects the economic viability of operations.

In this sense, he highlighted the importance of finding a balance between decarbonization and operational efficiency, as the transition to more sustainable fuels could imply an increase in air ticket prices, impacting passengers economically. Botelho also stressed the need to unify the carbon footprint in the region as a key step toward decarbonization.

On the other hand, the CEO of LATAM, Roberto Alvo, emphasized the growth of passengers in Latin America in recent years and the importance of promoting regulations for decarbonization in the region. ALTA has implemented initiatives such as the Regional Decarbonization Map and has observed a 31% reduction in carbon emissions over the last 20 years, despite a 50% reduction in airfares.

In conclusion, the need to continue working on improving airport infrastructure, reducing fuel costs, and advancing the implementation of sustainable fuels was highlighted to achieve a more efficient and environmentally friendly aviation industry in the Latin American and Caribbean region.
